Start without rushing
Remember a place, not just a picture
Pocket Pairs is a turn-based matching game. Flip two cards and look for identical symbols. Matches stay open; different symbols turn back after a short pause. A relaxed 6-pair deck has twelve cards. Larger decks add symbols without changing the rules.
A concrete first-round example
Suppose card 2 reveals a Leaf and card 7 reveals a Sun. That is one turn, not a match. Both turn back. Later, if card 4 reveals a Leaf, choose card 2 next: those two form a pair and stay open. Positions are shuffled in each round, so these card numbers are an explanation, not a fixed solution.
- Begin with 6 pairs. Scan the numbered positions before your first flip.
- When you see a known symbol, use its remembered position instead of opening a new card at random.
- After a mismatch, take the short pause to notice both positions. You lose no points and have no countdown.
- Finish a whole deck to record your turn count. Try a fresh deck at the same size before moving to 8 or 10 pairs.
Compare like with like
A ten-pair deck naturally needs more turns than a six-pair deck. Compare only your own completed rounds of the same size; there is no invented player average to beat. This is an entertainment game, not a diagnostic test or a promise of cognitive improvement.
